备注 No dachi, temple sword This sword was made and dedicated as a shrine sword and was not used in battle. However, during the 14th-15th centuries many swords of this length and longer were used as fighting swords. They were carried slung across the user's back. "The 73rd Kunemitsu omi no Kami Hojoji Tachibana no Masahiro made this sword in Edo of Musashi Province" inscription (onote)- "This sword is donated as a treasure sword by parishioners of Agawa Hachiman shrine of Toyoura County of Nagato on a lucky day of December in the third year of the Tenna era." (1683) Notes re lating to inscription- 73rd Kunemitsu- 73rd generation of Shintogo Kunemitsu who began the school approximately 300 years earlier. Note someone else who examined the sword suggested that this inscription reads 23rd generation, but James Jordan advises that the inscription clearlystates "73rd" Kami- "place by river", presumed to be the location of the workplace ura- side of sword onote- other side of sword tenna- start of year Edo period- mid 17th - mid 19th century Significance- "Hojoji Tachibana no Masahiro was an upper level swordsmith. It is rare to have a sword of this size made by such a prominent swordsmith" James Jordan, June 1996
