De-Recognition of Wikimedia Hong Kong[编辑]

This is an update from the Wikimedia Affiliations Committee. Translations are available.

Recognition as a Wikimedia movement affiliate — a chapter, thematic organization, or user group — is a privilege that allows an independent group to officially use the Wikimedia trademarks to further the Wikimedia mission.

The principal Wikimedia movement affiliate in the Hong Kong region is Wikimedia Hong Kong, a Wikimedia chapter recognized in 2008. As a result of Wikimedia Hong Kong’s long-standing non-compliance with reporting requirements, the Wikimedia Foundation and the Affiliations Committee have determined that Wikimedia Hong Kong’s status as a Wikimedia chapter will not be renewed after February 1, 2017.

Review of initial updates on Wikimedia movement strategy process[编辑]

The Wikimedia movement is beginning a movement-wide strategy discussion, a process which will run throughout 2017. For 15 years, Wikimedians have worked together to build the largest free knowledge resource in human history. During this time, we've grown from a small group of editors to a diverse network of editors, developers, affiliates, readers, donors, and partners. Today, we are more than a group of websites. We are a movement rooted in values and a powerful vision: all knowledge for all people. As a movement, we have an opportunity to decide where we go from here.

This movement strategy discussion will focus on the future of our movement: where we want to go together, and what we want to achieve. We hope to design an inclusive process that makes space for everyone: editors, community leaders, affiliates, developers, readers, donors, technology platforms, institutional partners, and people we have yet to reach. There will be multiple ways to participate including on-wiki, in private spaces, and in-person meetings. You are warmly invited to join and make your voice heard.

The immediate goal is to have a strategic direction by Wikimania 2017 to help frame a discussion on how we work together toward that strategic direction.

Regular updates are being sent to the Wikimedia-l mailing list, and posted on Meta-Wiki. Beginning with this message, monthly reviews of these updates will be sent to this page as well. Sign up to receive future announcements and monthly highlights of strategy updates on your user talk page.

现在Commons上有一个SVG的File:Wikinews-logo.svg和一个File:Wikinews-logo-zh2.png，都是按照CC-BY-SA 3.0释出。转换成SVG时，Wikinews这边的File:Wiki.png也该这么做。

Dear Wikimedians/Wikipedians:

Today we are starting a broad discussion to define Wikimedia's future role in the world and develop a collaborative strategy to fulfill that role. You are warmly invited to join the conversation.

There are many ways to participate, by joining an existing conversation or starting your own:

Track A (organized groups): Discussions with your affiliate, committee or other organized group (these are groups that support the Wikimedia movement).

Track B (individual contributors): On Meta or your local language or project wiki.

This is the first of three conversations, and it will run between now and April 15. The purpose of cycle 1 is to discuss the future of the movement and generate major themes around potential directions. What do we want to build or achieve together over the next 15 years?

We welcome you, as we create this conversation together, and look forward to broad and diverse participation from all parts of our movement.

Start of the 2017 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees elections[编辑]

On behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Elections Committee, I am pleased to announce that self-nominations are being accepted for the 2017 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees Elections.

The Board of Trustees (Board) is the decision-making body that is ultimately responsible for the long-term sustainability of the Wikimedia Foundation, so we value wide input into its selection. More information about this role can be found on Meta-Wiki. Please read the letter from the Board of Trustees calling for candidates.

The candidacy submission phase will last from April 7 (00:00 UTC) to April 20 (23:59 UTC).

We will also be accepting questions to ask the candidates from April 7 to April 20. You can submit your questions on Meta-Wiki.

Once the questions submission period has ended on April 20, the Elections Committee will then collate the questions for the candidates to respond to beginning on April 21.

The goal of this process is to fill the three community-selected seats on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. The election results will be used by the Board itself to select its new members.

The full schedule for the Board elections is as follows. All dates are inclusive, that is, from the beginning of the first day (UTC) to the end of the last.

  • April 7 (00:00 UTC) – April 20 (23:59 UTC) – Board nominations
  • April 7 – April 20 – Board candidates questions submission period
  • April 21 – April 30 – Board candidates answer questions
  • May 1 – May 14 – Board voting period
  • May 15–19 – Board vote checking
  • May 20 – Board result announcement goal

In addition to the Board elections, we will also soon be holding elections for the following roles:

  • Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC)
    • There are five positions being filled. More information about this election will be available on Meta-Wiki.
  • Funds Dissemination Committee Ombudsperson (Ombuds)
    • One position is being filled. More information about this election will be available on Meta-Wiki.

Please note that this year the Board of Trustees elections will be held before the FDC and Ombuds elections. Candidates who are not elected to the Board are explicitly permitted and encouraged to submit themselves as candidates to the FDC or Ombuds positions after the results of the Board elections are announced.

Beta Feature Two Column Edit Conflict View[编辑]

From May 9, the Two Column Edit Conflict View will be available as a beta feature on all wikis. The Two Column Edit Conflict View is a new interface for the edit conflict resolution page. It highlights differences between the editor's and the conflicting changes to make it easy to copy and paste pieces of the text and resolve the conflict. The feature fulfils a request for a more user-friendly edit conflict resolution from the German Community’s Technical Wishlist. Everyone is invited to test the feature and we hope that it will serve you well!

  • A new wikitext editing mode is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. The 2017 wikitext editor has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures to enable the ⧼Visualeditor-preference-newwikitexteditor-label⧽.
  • A new visual diff tool is available in VisualEditor's visual mode. You can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. More features will be added to this later. In the future, this tool may be integrated into other MediaWiki components. [1]
  • The team have added multi-column support for lists of footnotes. The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can request multi-column support for your wiki. [2]
  • You can now use your web browser's function to switch typing direction in the new wikitext mode. This is particularly helpful for RTL language users like Urdu or Hebrew who have to write JavaScript or CSS. You can use Command+Shift+X or Control+Shift+X to trigger this. [3]
  • The way to switch between the visual editing mode and the wikitext editing mode is now consistent. There is a drop-down menu that shows the two options. This is now the same in desktop and mobile web editing, and inside things that embed editing, such as Flow. [4]
  • The 分类 item has been moved to the top of the 页面选项 menu (from clicking on the "hamburger" icon) for quicker access. [5] There is also now a "Templates used on this page" feature there. [6]

  • There is a new keyboard shortcut for citations: Control+Shift+K on a PC, or Command+Shift+K on a Mac. It is based on the keyboard shortcut for making links, which is Control+K or Command+K respectively. [11]

  • The team is working on a syntax highlighting tool. It will highlight matching pairs of <ref> tags and other types of wikitext syntax. You will be able to turn it on and off. It will first become available in VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode, maybe late in 2017. [12]
  • The kind of button used to 显示预览, 显示更改, and finish an edit will change in all WMF-supported wikitext editors. The new buttons will use OOjs UI. The buttons will be larger, brighter, and easier to read. The labels will remain the same.   • The outdated 2006 wikitext editor will be removed later this year. It is used by approximately 0.03% of active editors. See a list of editing tools on mediawiki.org if you are uncertain which one you use. [14]

RevisionSlider[编辑]

RevisionSlider will be available as a default feature for all users on all wikis from May 17. The RevisionSlider adds a slider view to the diff page so that you can easily move between revisions. The slider view is collapsed by default, and will load by clicking on it. It can also be turned off entirely in the user preferences. RevisionSlider has been a default feature on German, Arabic and Hebrew Wikipedia for 6 months and a beta feature on all wikis for 8 months. The feature fulfills a wish from the German Community’s Technical Wishlist. Thanks to everyone who tested RevisionSlider and gave valuable feedback to improve the feature! We hope that RevisionSlider will continue to serve you well in your work.

维基新闻需要新增一位临时管理员[编辑]

维基新闻现在是个不活跃的项目，每周的平均编辑数相当低。目前有3位管理员，没有行政员。我查了一下编辑贡献，最近一位登入的管理员是在十天前，第二位是三周前，第三位是一个月前。其实十天登录一次对于维基新闻的管理而言没太大问题，因为编辑量并不高；问题在于偶尔会有需要快速删除，或者页面存废讨论的操作(维基新闻的存废讨论方针是3天)，另外还有新闻发布36小时后需要永久存档全保护，这些工作都需要管理权限。所以是否有维基百科的用户愿意兼任维基新闻的临时管理员，如有必要，我会在提报快删或存废讨论时到维基百科通知这位临时管理员，这样就不需要天天到维基新闻查看。(本文同步发表于ZHWN与ZHWP)--Tb095811zhwiki（讨论） 2017年5月25日 (四) 12:14 (UTC)[回复]

小弟就学业繁重而未能经常参与先行致歉。现时，存档保护由机器人执行，在发布后7天进行操作，问题不大。至于删除操作，小弟会尽力尽快处理。至于新增临时管理员，小弟持欢迎态度，然而应当考虑维基百科与维基新闻的方针始终有所不同，假如一名用户未曾参与本站编辑工作，则未必有太大帮助。最后，现时通知功能已经能够跨维基运作，其实没有必要到另一个站点通知管理员呢～—HW（讨论） 2017年5月25日 (四) 16:04 (UTC)[回复]

我觉得，实在缺人的时候，管理员可能不得不放弃一下避嫌原则，毕竟全域管理员和监管员基本上都不懂方块字，不太可能让他们帮忙处理纯粹破坏以外的事务。我在文言维基和维基语录有时会直接删除页面（备注：这两个计划没有正式的删除方针），只不过会在摘要中保留页面源代码以便他人核实。维基文库人多还好，但维基教科书、辞典和导游参与人数也不多，所以也是管理员自己发现自己处理。当然，这样的坏处是一旦删除有问题会惹很大麻烦，所以我只在非常有把握的情况下直接删。如果发现其他人重新活跃起来，可以再主动回到避嫌的状态。另外Tb095811zhwiki您既然能经常来检查编辑，那么也可以考虑自荐管理员，就像我先前在维基语录一样。--逆袭的天邪鬼（讨论） 2017年6月9日 (五) 17:21 (UTC)[回复]

提案:增加Wikinews:管理员例外原则[编辑]

由于ZHWN当前活跃的管理员只剩下一位，我认为有必要赋予这位管理员一些例外权限，我的提案文字如下：

当近期活跃的管理员用户只剩下一位，其他的管理员用户在距离上次管理操作已超过7天时，本地社群另外授权给这位管理员例外权限，以避免违反管理员避嫌原则，但此例外在第二位管理员出现后失效。
  1. 在其他用户协助确认（例如投票支持删除）下，可自行删除自己提删的页面。
  2. 在基于其他用户的要求下，可保护或解除保护自己编辑的页面，存档保护作业例外。

#可紧急赋权另一名维基新闻用户为临时管理员，使此例外情况结束。

这位管理员在使用例外原则完成以上操作后，需记载于管理员通告板备查。

News needs to be NEW. We have a constant battle with time. Often the articles get stale and we feel bad about losing an important article.

There are a couple of things which should be highlighted.

• First: Often there is only one author for an article. It is primarily due to the factor of time. We can't wait for someone to add/contribute to the article.

• Second: And this one is very general. Often, we are free, and wandering around the Wikinews project. Sometimes reading the archived articles and discussions, or sometimes, the other language Wikinews.

I often do that. I search for interesting articles on Spanish Wikinews, sometimes German, French and Russian too. Sometimes, it is really helpful. Instead of wandering here and there [on the internet] for a story amongst so many crowd-pulling articles with misleading headlines.

So, what I have to say is: When you are free (let's assume you speak two languages A and B and your home wiki is A), please go to B Wikinews and translate an article from B to A. And at the same time, translate one article from A and submit it for review on B.

Translating articles from one language to another is better than writing from scratch. And it saves time. But please note that each language Wikinews has different policy for foreign language sources.

It saves a lot of time, and I know because I have tried it. Other editors on A and/or B can help you adding something to the article, if this increases participation.

So, you see, one user, who was active only on A Wikinews is now fairly active member of B Wikinews and is also helping A Wikinews to improve the output.

When I counted, there were 33 Wikinews. I am not asking you to dream about each WIkinews write a different story and due to translations, we can have 33 articles on 33 projects. No, with the current number of reviewers, this is something I would call impossible.

But, you see, with time and experience, more and more editors can be capable to review articles. Besides, when you contribute to A and B, so, sooner or later, you can review on both the languages. About "reviewer" status, there is something I would like to add later.

So, we might not be able to publish 33 articles, but we can surely improve output of all the Wikinews. I was talking about "one user who knows A and B". Consider other editors knowing A and C; E and F; X, Y and A; Z and C and other combinations which makes a network. I have been trying to create a table of users vs languages they know with their proficiency and user rights.

I request all of the users to use the babel templates on their userpages. And if you do not mind, time zones. Users for the Original Reporting and accredited reporters, please provide geographical information if you are okay with sharing that information. Country, city or province, whatever you this is correct.

I request the admins to prepare a list of admins, reviewers and active editors.

Now, there are some very important things, like: what are the policies of various language Wikinews.

Each language has its own practices. So, it is very important that we understand each policy, and finally, create a policy so that the articles are acceptable on every Wikinews.

I am not asking you to abandon your local guidelines. You can and may continue writing articles as per those guidelines. The others may choose to translate it, and add those features so that it is globally acceptable.

There is also a probability that nobody translates it. Many factors including things in real life can affect that. But our aim is to improve all of the Wikinews together.

If we try to stick to the threshold policy, made by considering all of the policies of various projects, we can produce better news articles.

The main challenge is to know which articles to translate? So, I thought, why not create a page on any Wikinews, which contains a table. It will have article headlines and all languages in which we have Wikinews project. Add a tick, star, plus or any fixed symbol next to the headlines for which it is written.

So, when an editor visits the page, he or she can see what are the current articles (make sure you mention the date on which the event took place). See for which languages it has been translated and if there is a language he or she can translate, do it.

I would not expect a Canadian editor to know or understand Russian (for example) or a Polish to understand Arabic (for example), but it is not necessary. But speaking for general public and to make this task [understanding only the headlines] simpler, editors can use machine translation.

But this should be only done when you (editors) are free, on Wikinews and probably looking for something to write.

This will improve the content of Wikinews as well as contributors.

Editors who can speak more than one languages, please help translating [local] policies, style guide and other [important] regulations.

If you have any idea to make "looking for the translated articles in the table" better, please share with us.

@Waihorace： You are fluent with Chinese, right? And looking at your userpage, you know Chinese and English. If you can understand English well enough, you can translate articles from English Wikinews to Chinese. For Chinese to English, we can try to make sense, and there will be someone who might help copyediting the article.

Improved search in deleted pages archive[编辑]

During Wikimedia Hackathon 2016, the Discovery team worked on one of the items on the 2015 community wishlist, namely enabling searching the archive of deleted pages. This feature is now ready for production deployment, and will be enabled on all wikis, except Wikidata.

Right now, the feature is behind a feature flag - to use it on your wiki, please go to the Special:Undelete page, and add &fuzzy=1 to the URL, like this: https://test.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AUndelete&fuzzy=1. Then search for the pages you're interested in. There should be more results than before, due to using ElasticSearch indexing (via the CirrusSearch extension).

We plan to enable this improved search by default on all wikis soon (around August 1, 2017). If you have any objections to this - please raise them with the Discovery team via email or on this announcement's discussion page. Like most Mediawiki configuration parameters, the functionality can be configured per wiki. Once the improved search becomes the default, you can still access the old mode using &fuzzy=0 in the URL, like this: https://test.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AUndelete&fuzzy=0

Please note that since Special:Undelete is an admin-only feature, this search capability is also only accessible to wiki admins.

Accessible editing buttons[编辑]

The MediaWiki developers have been slowly improving the accessibility of the user interface. The next step in this transition will change the appearance of some buttons and may break some outdated (non-updated or unmaintained) user scripts and gadgets.

You can see and use the old and new versions now. Most editors will only notice that some buttons are slightly larger and have different colors.

However, this change also affects some user scripts and gadgets. Unfortunately, some of them may not work well in the new system. New print to pdf feature for mobile web readers

The Readers web team will be deploying a new feature this week to make it easier to download PDF versions of articles on the mobile website.

Providing better offline functionality was one of the highlighted areas from the research done by the New Readers team in Mexico, Nigeria, and India. The teams created a prototype for mobile PDFs which was evaluated by user research and community feedback. The prototype evaluation received positive feedback and results, so development continued.

For the initial deployment, the feature will be available to Google Chrome browsers on Android. Support for other mobile browsers to come in the future. For Chrome, the feature will use the native Android print functionality. Users can choose to download a webpage as a PDF. Mobile print styles will be used for these PDFs to ensure optimal readability for smaller screens.

The feature is available starting Wednesday, Nov 15. For more information, see the project page on MediaWiki.org.
